Our Facility
Avalon has developed a second-to-none reputation for providing excellent family entertainment, top-notch facilities, and excellent youth activities for over the past fifty years! Avalon is consistently ranked as one of the top Swim & Racquet Clubs in Richmond (Richmond Magazine – Best / Worst List).
Tennis
Avalon has a full-time tennis professional and staff that have developed a comprehensive tennis program. We provide tennis lessons, clinics, teams, and tournaments for all ages and skill levels throughout most of the year. In addition, our tennis program provides a number of social events geared for our tennis players.
Swim and Dive
Avalon is home to the “Gators,” one of the top summer youth swim and dive teams in Central Virginia. A number of children and young adults, ranging in ages from 5 to 18, participate on our aquatic teams. In addition, we provide swim and dive clinics and private lessons for all ages and skill levels.
Summer Camps
Gator Camp
Throughout the summer, Avalon conducts a number of week-long camps (known as Gator Camp) for children 5 to 10 years of age. One of the most popular summer day camps in the area, the Gator Camp has a wide-range of activities including
- Learning how to play tennis
- Arts and crafts
- Playing fun games
- Just hanging out in the pool!
Social
While we are a swim and racquet club, perhaps the most important part of what we provide is a neighborhood club with family-oriented activities. We typically plan family and adult social activities throughout the summer season with special events on Memorial Day, Father’s Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. Other social events each year typically include Friday night “Family Nights” throughout the summer, teen and pre-teen socials and our Season Grand Opening social each year where we welcome our newest adult members by throwing a party in their honor and welcoming in the new season.
History
A core group of organizers founded our club in 1957 after they determined that the growing West End of Richmond needed a community swimming pool. The club, which was incorporated under the name Avalon Recreation Association, Inc. (“Avalon”), purchased nearly eleven acres of land on Heathfield Road (just off of Derbyshire Road) and is now one of the best summer recreation facilities in Henrico County.
Leisure
Although we have a number of swim, dive and tennis programs, many of our members enjoy lounging around the pools or swimming during our season (Memorial Day to Labor Day). Many people simply enjoy recreational tennis with friends and family. Many of our members have been with us for over a generation.
